Finding the Diameter & Volume of a Sphere by Vernier Caliper

typical sphereSphere is a basic object used in every day life and in industries. If a person learns to calculate a volume of sphere with the help of vernier calipers then one can calculate the volume of any sphere whether a spherical bowl, spherical glass, spherical tanks etc. So the process of measuring diameter and calculating volume of sphere is discussed in detail.

Volume of the sphere :

A methodological procedure can be used to find the volume of a sphere. Just grip the sphere from different positions to find the values of the Main Scale Reading and the Vernier Coincidence and record the values in a table. Use this to find the mean diameter and the mean radius (mean diameter/2). Then put these values in the formula V= 4/3 x pi x r^3 to find the volume of the sphere.

  1. a) Diameter of the sphere :
S.No M.S.R                acm Vernier Coincidence   (n) Fraction   b=(n-x)*L.C Total Reading (a+b) cm
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

From the above table calculate the average of diameter by combining all five readings into one.

Average diameter of the sphere  d = 2r = (d1 + d2 + d3 + d4 + d5)/5 = …………. cm,

Mean radius of the sphere           r = d/2 = ………….. cm,

Volume of the sphere                  V = 4/3 x pi x r^3
